Other Cyclic Peptides

Over the last ten years the number of macrocyclic gene products has grown from no known examples to encompass a range of molecules from bacteria, plants and animals. The examination of other cyclic peptides found in nature provides an idea of the shared themes and concepts inherent in the biosynthesis and natural functions of cyclic peptides. The first such example considered is MCoTI-II, which shares some parallels with the cyclotides in that it possesses a CCK framework and with SFTI-1 in that it is a trypsin inhibitor. In common with both, it is plant-derived peptide. Following this, examples from bacteria and animals are described.
